9 things to know before buying the 2022 Jeep Renegade
The Jeep Renegade has been a perfect option for those looking for the rugged design and off-road performance you normally expect from a Jeep without compromising on versatility and front comfort. Launched in 2015, it became an instant hit around the world, and it is also one of the best-selling models in the subcompact crossover SUV segment. With the launch of the 2022 Jeep Renegade, Jeep has further refined the offering to make it a more attractive proposition.
Launching at a base MSRP of $24,695, the 2022 Jeep Renegade is here to rival rivals like the Volkswagen Taos, Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona. The Renegade is available in 6 trim configurations and there is also the capable Trailhawk trim on board. It’s a perfect family SUV with a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine residing under the hood. The interior and exterior design also stands out. However, before putting your money on the 2022 Jeep Renegadehere are 10 things you need to know.
9 Square design stands out
The 2022 Jeep Renegade is the only offering in the subcompact crossover SUV segment that looks rugged and off-road ready right from the factory. It is equipped with flat black cladding on the front, sides and rear, giving it a very macho look for a car with such compact exterior dimensions.
With the Trailhawk trim, you get more classic Jeep factors, which helps it stand out from its bland rivals. The red tow hooks, a more striking front end with a higher approach angle and the black bonnet sticker give it the required presence. Even the regular trim gets nice exterior elements like crisp character lines, 19-inch alloy wheels, a double-glazed panoramic sunroof and LED taillights.
8 Quite capable off-roader
Launching for an MSRP of $31,340, the 2022 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk is the one to get if you’re planning on going off-road with your subcompact crossover. Unlike rivals like the Mazda CX-30 and Volkswagen Taos, the Renegade Trailhawk has many mechanical advantages, making it a pleasure to drive off-road.
The 1.3-liter turbocharged engine delivers decent low-end performance and helps it get out of slush and sand with ease. Equipped with a standard 4×4 drivetrain with Low Mode 4 and impressive ground clearance, you don’t need to slow down for rough roads. It also has a class-leading departure angle and approach angle.
seven Lethargic acceleration
With the discontinuation of the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that was offered through the 2021 model year of the Renegade, all trims now feature the 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine producing 177 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque.
This engine is mated to a 9-speed torque converter automatic transmission and all trims except the base Sport trim get the 4×4 drivetrain. 0-60 MPH comes in 9 seconds and the quarter-mile run is done in 17.1 seconds. By comparison, the Ford Escape and Mazda CX-30 could complete the same 0-60 mph run in 7.7 seconds and 8.2 seconds, respectively.
6 Not as roomy as some rivals
The compact exterior dimensions make the 2022 Jeep Renegade one of the worst in the segment in terms of rear space. With the lowest length, wheelbase and width in the segment, the Ford Escape and Honda HR-V offered a higher rear row with better head, leg and shoulder room.
There isn’t a lot of storage space inside the cabin, especially for the rear passengers. However, the 18.5 cubic foot cargo area is decent. The front row seats offer superb space and the seats are wide and accommodating too.
5 The Uconnect infotainment system is integrated
The old 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that came with the lower trims of the outgoing model has been removed and as a result all trims now get the impressive 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreens. It’s one of the most intuitive systems around, and it’s loaded with all the bells and whistles.
Standard features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, built-in navigation, voice recognition and Bluetooth connectivity. The standard 6-speaker audio system gets the job done. However, you can also opt for the Kenwood audio system with some of the higher trim configurations.
4 Has a 4-star crash safety rating
The 2022 Jeep Renegade is one of the few offerings from the Jeep stable that comes with all the bells and whistles in terms of driver assist technologies. Standard features include forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.
All basic safety features are also standard. With the solid build quality offered, the 2022 Jeep Renegade received a 4 stars in the NHTSA crash test. However, he did not receive the title of top security pick in the IIHS crash test.
3 Decent warranty coverage and reliability history
There’s nothing exciting about the warranty package offered with the 2022 Jeep Renegade. Jeep offers a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. However, the free maintenance coverage for three years is a plus point.
In terms of reliability, the 2022 Jeep Renegade has received no recalls and complaints from customers according to NHTSA. However, the outgoing 2021 model of the Renegade received 14 customer complaints. JD Power gave the 2022 Renegade an overall rating of 77 out of 100, with 80 out of 100 in the quality and reliability sector. The dealership experience received a mediocre rating of 68 out of 100.
2 Funky interior looks great
The funky interior of the 2022 Jeep Renegade sees no major overhauls from older model years. However, it still looks perfect with a good mix of modern styling and comfort making it a great daily driver and long distance tourer. The dash picks up Wrangler features, and we loved the front passenger grab handle and body color accents.
The touchscreen infotainment is neatly stacked in the center of the dash and the knobs and buttons don’t feel cheap. The chunky leather-wrapped steering wheel is premium to hold and the center console with a painted finish and soft-touch door pads are perfect.
1 Quite fuel efficient
Get the FWD-spec Sport trim and you’re looking at 24 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. With a fuel tank capacity of 12.7 gallons, the 2022 Jeep Renegade Sport could drive a range of 406 miles on a full tank of gas.
If you get other versions of the Renegade, it offers 23 MPG city gas mileage and 29 MPG highway gas mileage. The 26 MPG combined gas mileage provided by the 4×4-equipped versions proved to be inferior to those of the Honda HR-V, Ford Escape and Mazda CX-30.
