airpods: Apple AirPods Buying Guide: Which One Should You Buy

After an interruption of almost 30 months, Apple launched the new variant of AirPods, the world’s most popular wireless headphones. New AirPods are the third generation of true wireless headphones from Apple. Apple currently sells three models of AirPods – AirPods Pro, AirPods (3rd generation) and AirPods (2nd generation). Here we take you through how the three AirPods stack up against each other, what features they offer, and which one should you buy:

AirPods Pro: Features, Price, and More

Do you see the word Pro in the name? This should tell you that these are the best wireless headphones that Apple sells. AirPods Pro feature an in-ear design and come with silicone tips. Apple offers three sizes of ear tips for you to choose from so you can find the best fit.

Since these are the Pro headphones, you will get all the features. You get Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) – which is arguably the best you can find in any wireless earphone on the market – and there’s Transparency Mode as well. AirPods Pro have a force sensor that allows you to control playback and also activate ANC mode. AirPods Pro are powered by the H1 chip and support quick pairing, automatic device switching, spatial audio, and other features.
Apple has also upgraded the AirPods as they now come with a MagSafe charging case. You can also charge it wirelessly with any Qi compatible charger.
Key Features: ANC, Spatial Audio Support
Battery life: 4.5 hours and 24 hours with charging case.
Price: Rs 24,990

AirPods (3rd generation): what you get

Apple’s latest AirPods are inspired by AirPods Pro in more ways than one. Apple has tweaked the design and shortened the stem compared to AirPods (2nd gen). They look pretty much like AirPods Pro but don’t come with ear tips inside the box. The new AirPods come with a skin detection sensor that tells connected Apple devices that you have when the AirPods are on.

AirPods (3rd generation) have the H1 chip which allows you to support features like audio sharing, quick pairing, etc. There is no ANC function on the AirPod 3 – reserved only for AirPods Pro. However, the newer AirPods do support spatial audio. You also get a MagSafe charging case and the case can also be charged wirelessly.
Key Features: Support Spatial Audio, Skin Detection Sensor
Battery life: 6 hours and 24 hours with charging case.
Price: Rs 18,500

AirPods (2nd Generation): Is This The Right One For You?

The oldest and cheapest AirPods you can buy today. A design similar to the new AirPods but with a longer shaft. These AirPods are also powered by the H1 chip but lack features. There is no ANC or support for Spatial Audio. You can play / pause music or activate Siri by tapping on the sides of the earbuds.

Apple used to provide wireless charging cases with these AirPods, but after launching the new AirPods you only get the one with Lightning port connectivity. These AirPods still produce very good audio quality and offer seamless integration with other Apple devices. If you’re not too keen on the best of Apple, these are the AirPods for you. Low – relatively speaking – in terms of cost but high in terms of utility and quality.
Key feature: H1 chip for quick pairing
Battery life: 5 hours and 24 hours with charging case
Price: Rs 12,500

What’s the best AirPod for you?

The answer to this is, if you want the best and without compromise, then AirPods are the ones for you. Despite being two years old, AirPods Pro can compete with all the latest premium offerings on the market. But some people might find the price a deterrent. And that’s where AirPods (3rd generation) come in – they cost around Rs 7,000 less and are Apple’s newest product. You won’t get features like ANC and Transparency mode, but the second AirPods were better and blocked out noise without ANC, so we’d expect them to do a fair job as well. If you want the most “basic” headphones but still want good performance, AirPods (2nd generation) are the right choice.
