Bollywood superstar’s son gets out of jail in drug case
Hundreds of fans of Shah Rukh Khan, who has found himself at the center of a social media boycott over the high-profile drug case, lined up to greet Khan as he arrived at his home in Mumbai. Some danced and lit firecrackers in jubilation.
Khan and seven others were arrested on October 3 when narcotics officers raided a party and seized drugs from a luxury cruise ship off the coast of Mumbai. He had been held in prison since October 8.
India’s narcotics agency said it had evidence in the form of WhatsApp messages that Khan was involved in illegal drug trafficking.
Khan’s lawyer Mukul Rohatgi told the court that the agency found no drugs on Khan and that the allegations that he was in contact with drug traffickers were false. He called the arrest “arbitrary” and said the agency did not perform a medical examination to show he had used drugs.
The case has made headlines and social media in India, with fans of the actor demanding Khan’s release while others are calling for a boycott of his father’s films.
The 55-year-old megastar is India’s most beloved actor and is known as the “King of Bollywood”. He has appeared in over 105 films over nearly three decades.
In September last year, some of Bollywood’s most prominent stars were questioned by the narcotics agency over the death of famous actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Rajput committed suicide, and doctors and police have ruled out drugs.
