Gauteng’s social development corruption eats away at feeding programs


Corruption surveys at the Gauteng Department of Social Development more than doubled last year compared to 2019, with nonprofits (NPOs) continuing to suffer. The ministry has opened 57 forensic investigations into allegations of misconduct by officials over the past year, including those involving questionable transactions with non-profit organizations. In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, there were only 16. Investigations into the lack of internal financial controls showed that at least R 1 million had been stolen from the state over the course of over the past four years as a result of civil servant relationships with non-profit organizations and other transgressions.
