Mattoon Chamber of Commerce supports seniors with scholarship

Mattoon, IL (WCIA)

The Mattoon Chamber of Commerce works with its members and the community for the continuous improvement of Mattoon. In 2015, we formed the Mattoon Chamber Charitable Corporation (MCCC) and obtained 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. This means that contributions to the Mattoon Chamber Charitable Corporation are tax deductible as donations. By separating the charitable functions of the Chamber from day-to-day operations, individuals and businesses that contribute to the charitable work of the Chamber can benefit from IRS status and the corresponding deduction.

The Chamber is able to promote Mattoon and our chamber businesses through donations to the MCCC. The largest example of donated funds being used is the Mattoon Chamber Charitable Corporation Mattoon High School Scholarship Program. The Chamber has developed a program to award three $1,000 scholarships to Mattoon High School seniors. One scholarship is for a Mattoon High School senior attending a traditional college or university and two scholarships are for seniors seeking vocational training. The Chamber and our Board of Directors recognize the need to support businesses in the region that need professionally trained people as well as traditional graduates. We want to ensure that vocational students also have the opportunity to obtain financial support for their studies.

The Chamber uses all 50/50 raffle proceeds generated through our after-hours and special event activities for our scholarship program. Participants in our Business After Hours and other Chamber events have the opportunity to win half of all proceeds raised in our sweepstakes. Even though we were only able to organize six of the twelve After Hour events last year, we still had enough money in reserve to contribute to the three scholarships this year. Many winners have even donated all of their winnings to the Chamber for scholarships.

We are pleased to announce this year’s scholarship recipients, Cooper Bergstrom who will attend St. Louis University to study pre-dental education; Paige Farmer who will attend Lake Land College to study Nursing and Isabella Smith who will attend Millikin University to study Secondary Education.
