Pallone and Schakowsky applaud enactment of bill to protect babies from unsafe sleeping products

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chairman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released today the following joint statement today after President Biden signed HR 3182, the Safe Sleep for Babies Act of 2021. , introduced by Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), in the law:

“Despite pediatricians and consumer safety advocates warning of their danger, unsafe baby products like slant rails and crib bumpers are still in stores and online where expectant parents, grandparents excited and well-meaning friends may buy them unknowingly. Being a new parent can be hard enough and keeping our newborn babies safe is a goal we all share. The Safe Baby Sleep Act will ban these dangerous products and keep them off the market, giving families the peace of mind they deserve when purchasing new products for their newborns.

“We commend Consumer and Trade Protection Subcommittee Vice Chair Cárdenas for his hard work on this legislation that will protect babies and promote safe sleep practices. We are delighted that President Biden signed the bill today and we look forward to continuing to work with his administration to implement it in the months ahead. »

The Safe Sleep for Babies Act, from the Energy and Commerce Committee, past the House in June 2021 and the Senate earlier this month.
