US Lumber Coalition applauds the rigorous and continued application of trade laws by the US Department of Commerce
WASHINGTON, November 24, 2021 / PRNewswire / – The US Department of Commerce today issued its final ruling in the second administrative review of softwood lumber imports from Canada. The combined anti-subsidy and anti-dumping duty rate of 17.9% confirms once again that Canadian imports are unfairly subsidized and marketed in the US market.
“The US Lumber Coalition thanks the Commerce Department for its hard work and continued commitment to firmly enforce US trade laws against unfairly traded Canadian lumber imports,” said Jason Brochu, President of the US Lumber Coalition and Co-President of the Pleasant River Lumber Company. “Enforcement of trade laws maximizes long-term domestic production and lumber availability and has already resulted in dramatic growth in U.S.-made lumber to meet the high demand for building a more American houses, âadded Brochu.
Investment in US sawmills and capacity expansion have been strong since the US Lumber Coalition filed trade dossiers in 2016. The US industry appears to be on track to have produced 17.5 billion feet- additional lumber plank until 2021, an average of 3.5 billion per year. These increases more than offset any decline in unfairly traded Canadian imports and are sufficient to build approximately 1.2 million US single-family homes.
âThe US Lumber Coalition urges the administration to continue full enforcement of the trade law. The production of American lumber in America to meet domestic demand is a direct result of the application. A level playing field is essential for continued investment and the growth of the internal market of the timber industry, its hundreds of thousands of workers and its thousands of communities across United States, concluded Brochu.
US industry remains open to a new US-Canada softwood lumber trade deal if and when Canada can demonstrate that he is serious about negotiating for a deal that compensates for the damage caused by unjust Canadian trade to producers, workers and forest land holders in the United States. Until then, the US Lumber Coalition fully supports the rigorous and continued enforcement of US trade laws to combat from Canada unfair timber trade practices.
