Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce: Virtual Public Forum on Homelessness in Walnut Creek, November 17, 2021

The Walnut Creek Homelessness Task Force, established in 2013, is hosting a free public community forum on homelessness in Walnut Creek on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. via Zoom. This is the fourth in a series of forums designed to provide a platform for community members and business owners to discuss homelessness in Walnut Creek and to learn more about actions taken in the process. city ââand county to tackle homelessness.
The fall forum will focus on mental health services available to the homeless and those at risk and will begin with a short video providing information on the continuum of care available to homeless people in Walnut Creek.
Following the video and opening remarks by the Mayor of Walnut Creek, Kevin Wilk, Michael Myette, Mental Health Program Supervisor at Contra Costa Public Health, will present information on behavioral health resources available to homeless people. He will be joined by Lisa Thomas from CORE (Coordinated Outreach, Referral & Engagement), a program of Contra Costa County Health, Housing, and Homeless Services. The two agencies will discuss how they are successfully working together to facilitate and deliver health and basic services on behalf of the homeless and those at risk.
In June 2019, the Walnut Creek Police Department launched the Homeless Outreach Program (HOP), a dedicated team of two officers who tackle both quality of life and public safety issues related to homelessness in Walnut Creek, offering referrals to shelters and mental health services to those in need. The work of the HOP team will be presented during the forum.
Following the presentations, a panel of experts representing a variety of resources will be on hand to share information on mental health services available to people experiencing homelessness and to answer questions. During Q&A, speakers and panelists will answer questions from participants through forum moderator Mark Newsom.
